Compensation in lakhs, expenditure in crores

Going by the field reports about Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy’s Odarpu Yatra in Srikakulam district, the expenditure incurred on the tour is 100 times more than what is paid to the families of post-YSR death victims.

Not less than Rs 10 crore has been spent so far in Srikakulam alone for Jagan tour for making unprecedented arrangements everywhere he travelled. His supporters from Kadapa and Hyderabad went there well in advance to make preparations for the success of his tour by mobilizing huge crowds. Money is being spent like water on mobilizing crowds, campaigning and vehicles accompanying his convoy. Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao's son Manohar Naidu took up the responsibility of mobilizing crowds and making the tour an unprecedented success.

More than 200 vehicles arrived in Srikakulam well in advance from different parts of the state. Most of these vehicles had the registration numbers from Kadapa, Anantapur and Hyderabad. Not less than 500 leaders from Kadapa district landed in Srikakulam a week before the yatra began and make arrangements in coordination with local Youth Congress, NSUI leaders and representatives of local bodies.

Inquiries revealed that the crowds were mobilised from villages and towns from across Srikakulam and even from bordering areas of Orissa. “A make-shift parking arrangement was made near the meeting venue and one could see some buses even bearing Orissa registration number,” sources said. Sources said each person brought for the meetings of Jagan was paid Rs 100-Rs 150 and a packet of food. For men, of course, a quarter bottle of liquor was an additional incentive.

Compared to this heavy expenditure, the amount distributed among the families of victims at several places like Loddaputti, Jagati, Kesaravada, Sunnadevi, Pollada, Marlapadu, Bhavanapadu, Tekkali, Tamarapalli and Narasannapet was insignificant. “Compared to the time he is spending on addressing public gatherings during his tour, the time he is spending with these families is very insignificant in the entire day,” a journalist who accompanied the tour observed.
