No pre-marital sex please, we are Indians

Bharatiya Janata Party has taken strong exception to the Supreme Court's observations in support of pre-marital sex and live in relationships.

BJP senior leader M Venkaiah Naidu told reporters that the party would disagree with the apex court's contention that live in relationship could not be construed as an offence since such an arrangement went against the basic tenets of Indian culture and traditions.

"Such prescriptions are not acceptable. They encourage the youth to resort to unethical practices and lead to degeneration of moral values," Venkaiah Naidu said,

He argued that pre-marital sex was an offence and totally unacceptable to Indian society. “It will corrupt the young minds," Naidu said, adding that the BJP did not subscribe to such views and continue to oppose such unethical acts in the country as they are against our tradition and culture," Naidu said.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday observed that a man and woman living together without marriage could not be treated as a crime. While dealing with a special leave petition filed by Tamil actress Khusboo seeking to quash criminal cases filed against her in Tamil Nadu for endorsing pre-marital sex, the court also commented that pre-marital sex between two consenting adults was not an offence.
